Hello once more. Apologies for the recent break in transmission but work had to be carried out on the innards of the site. Nowadays a site has to be viewable on anything from a large desktop screen down to the extremely limited screen real estate of a mobile phone, and the site as it was wasn't doing the best it could in that respect. What looks good on a laptop would probably look like crap on a mobile device. What should happen is this: the browser on your device requests a web page and if the page has been well designe it will politely ask the browser, "Hey mate, what kind of device are you running on? What's the size of the screen, what's its resolution, is the device in landscape or portrait orientatition?" (Stop me if I'm boring you). The page will then adjust it's content and its layout in order to provide the best view for size of screen on which it is to be displayed. That's the theory anyway. I hope that I have carried out the theory, if only to a limited extent.
Bit slow on the update lately but Round 2 is well underway with six games completed. Richard, Paul S and Paul C share the lead with 2 points from 2 games.
A trophy to honour the Club Champion has been ordered. It is a 16 inch shield on which are mounted 14 plates to be engraved with the Champion's name. There is an option to add further plates in the future.
Round 1 has been completed with no injuries or fatalities. The draw for Round 2 is on the Club Championship page.
The Articles page now has increased its content by 100% — four articles up from two articles! Any contributions from members would be welcome. Any odd openings you've faced? Any annoying opponents you've endured? Any anecdotes to share? Any books you've read and can reccomend? Go on, give it a go. Sharpen those quills, fill the inkwell and scratch out a few lines. It gets easier and even enjoyable once you get over that initial reluctance.
Another two Club Championship games are posted for perusal, Stephen v Paul and Marcus v Club Champion Richard.
The first tranche of round one game pgns have been posted and are available for viewing/download.
Seven Championship face-offs have been completed. The results are on the Club Championship page. No pgns available yet, but will be posted as soon as Rudy has done his work and I get them.
There was a remarkably good turnout on Wednesday evening for the Club's first chess playing session at Morda & Sweeny village hall. Seven Club Championship games were got underway and a couple of casual boards were in operation. A successful evening indeed.
Picture the scene — thirteen men sitting round a long table. No, not the Last Supper in jerusalem but the Oswestry Chess Club AGM in Morda. The main points to come out of the meeting were
Okay, with that out of the way, all the website's pages have been scraped clean of last season's details, the decks have been scrubbed, hatches battened down and sails set and we cast off to brave the high seas and possible doldrums of the 2025/2026 chess season.
